Pierro Wins Bill Stutt Stakes 2012 in Comfortable Style

Star colt Pierro entered the Group 2 2012 Stutt Stakes (1600m) with seven undefeated starts to his name and left with eight after scoring an easy win at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

The Golden Slipper winner justified his “Black Caviar” type odds as he showed tremendous talent and acceleration to score a convincing five-length win ahead of Carringbush Jack.

The son of Lonhro will face his next test in two weeks time in the Caulfield Guineas before being given the chance to win the prestigious Cox Plate as a three-year-old.

Nash Rawiller, who has ridden Pierro throughout his entire career, ensured he did enough on the colt to allow him to be at the top of his game come the Caulfield Guineas.

“He’s going on to better things so he needed this tonight,” Rawiller said.

“I wanted to be as soft as possible but still make him get the job done and get a bit of improvement out of it.

“He took the first turn like he’d been round it a hundred times…he’s trained by Gai Waterhouse. I knew she’d have him ready for tonight and there’s still plenty of improvement to come.”

Waterhouse, who made the unusual move of running him at 1600 metres after a 1200m first-up run, could not speak highly enough of Pierro’s performance.

“He’s just such an exciting colt. It was just a galloping lesson…the way he lowered himself and found the line and his acceleration at the end of the race. That was the best thing,” Waterhouse said.

There will be more chances to back Pierro this spring and the best place to that is bookmaker.com.au.
