Sunday’s 2012 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) stands as an important race with many getting their final chance to impress ahead of the Caulfield Guineas on October 13.
Nine horses will contest the Group 3 event that features plenty of quality with Golden Rose winner Epaulette sitting at the top of the market ($2.50).
The Darley colt is the clear favourite but there are a number of strong chances behind him including Ashokan ($5.00), Shamexpress ($6.50), Awesome Bro ($7.50) and Dominant ($8.00).
This race is one to follow as it often provides a good form line into the Group 1 guineas. Not sure who to back? Keep reading as the Races.com.au experts have been pouring over the form to bring you our very best selections.
#1 Epaulette $2.60
Yes it’s boring backing the short-priced favourite but nobody has gone broke backing winners. And that is exactly what Epaulette looks to be here.
Coming off a flying Golden Rose finish where she beat a number of Sunday’s contenders and the start before finished third to a horse called Pierro.
A very adaptable horse who can be ridden forward or back giving Darley number one jockey Kerrin McEvoy plenty of options from the barrier two draw.
Both Dominant and Awesome Bro are very lightly raced but both have big futures.
Dominant has had just three career starts and was just edged out in the McKenzie Stakes before finishing fifth from a tricky barrier in the Henry Bucks Stakes. He’s third-up here so should be at the top of his game and gets the bonus of Nick Hall back on.
Awesome Bro has won two of four starts and is improving with each hitout. After running fifth first-up in the McKenzie Stakes he showed he had taken plenty out of the run to finish second in the Henry Bucks Stakes.
Both have Guineas starts on the line and can produce big showings this weekend.
