Alcopop Can Sizzle Again in 2012 JRA Cup

They may not have won a race in over a year but Alcopop has what it takes to bounce back in tonight’s JRA Cup 2012 at Moonee Valley and shouldn’t be forgotten by the punters according to their trainer Jake Stephens.

Alcopop is a good chance in the 2012 JRA Cup tonight according to trainer Jake Stephens

Eight-year-old Jeune gelding Alcopop will be out for their first win since last year’s Penny Edition Stakes in Adelaide when they line-up as one of 14 stayers in the $200,000 Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) under the lights in Moonee Valley Race 8 at 10:15pm this evening.

Last seen running a third-up ninth when beaten six lengths by Happy Trails in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at the track a fortnight ago, Alcopop is currently rated a $16 chance in the JRA Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au that are led by the in-form Lloyd Williams-owned spring cups hope Excluded ($2.90).

“He was definitely still a run short and I was reasonably happy with it,” the Victor Harbour-based Stephens said of Alcopop in the Dato.

“He was so far back and was pushed wider and wider. He didn’t get any favours.”

While their recent form leaves a lot to be desired Stephens is confident there is improvement to come from Alcopop this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival starting tonight in the JRA Cup which they won back in 2009.

“He was going so well then and this time in we’ve taken a bit longer to get him up but, hopefully, we’ll have him peaking at the right time,” Stephens said this week.

“If you look at some of the other horses around that are going well early in the season, the others pick up and catch them at the end.”

Alcopop drew barrier 13 but will jump from gate 12 following the withdrawal of the two emergencies with regular rider Dom Tourneur in the saddle.

Other top fancies in the JRA Cup betting markets include Bart Cummings’ last-start winner at the track Precedence ($6), the Anthony Freedman-trained Fruehling ($6.50) who also comes off a win having won first-up at Mornington, and possible 2012 Caulfield Cup contender Dance With Her ($8.50) who faces her toughest assignment to date.
