Ms Gai Waterhouse is gearing up for a super day at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday saddling up three odds-on favourites at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival meet, one of which is Strawberry Boy in the Colin Stephen Quality 2012.
Earlier in the day Waterhouse’s Cox Plate-bound supermare More Joyous will start at a Black Caviar price for her second-up run in the $250,000 Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) before her young Epsom Handicap fancy Fat Al jumps odds-on in the $157,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1600m).
Then in Rosehill Race 6 she will be represented by her third shortie with Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Strawberry Boy the hot favourite for the $125,000 Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality Handicap (2400m).
In the latest Colin Stephen Quality odds at bookmaker.com.au Strawberry Boy, drawn in gate one of eight with Jim Cassidy to ride, pays $1.70.
A winner of their opening two starts this time in, Strawberry Boy suffered just their second loss from six career starts to date on September 15 when finishing an eye-catching third to Stout Hearted in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).
Saturday sees them step up to the mile and a half for the first time, their performance in which will determine whether they press onto Saturday week’s $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan over the same distance (2400m) at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day.
Two horses then occupy the second line of Colin Stephen Quality betting with Julienas and Kelinni the co $4 favourites.
A stablemate of Strawberry Boy, Waterhouse’s imported Cape Cross gelding Julienas has been in excellent form in their three runs down under this season including their last start victory in the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) on September 7.
The Chris Waller-trained Kelinni meanwhile has also been the picture of consistency over their past five runs winning back-to-back Warwick Farm races in August before crossing less than a length away fourth to Julienas in the Wyong Gold Cup.
Other longer-priced roughies in the markets worth a look-in for the exotics then include Joe Pride’s former Queensland stayer Racing Heart (421) and the David Payne-trained Kingston Town Stakes fourth placed Praecido ($21).
