Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This Saturday’s 2012 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill Gardens is shaping up as a two horse betting race for the punters with the Peter Snowden-trained Albrecht the narrow favourite over Gai Waterhouse’s Kabayan in the three-year-olds’ showdown.
Running as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:40pm the $250,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) features just seven hopefuls this year and it is Caulfield Guineas-bound Redoute’s Choice colt Albrect who is leading the markets at $2 through bookmaker.com.au.
Winner of the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) two back, the consistent youngster will jump from barrier seven with regular rider Kerrin McEvoy continuing their association.
Albrecht is sure to have an easier time on Saturday, despite seeing the 1500m for the first time, after they came within a nose of the Group 1 Golden Rose win over 1400m when second to their stablemate Epaulette in the classic on September 15.
Haradasun gelding Kabayan meanwhile follows closely in the Stan Fox Stakes odds at a quote of $2.20 as the bookies tip them to improve on their Golden Rose fifth.
Also a chance for the $1 million Group 1 The Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on October 13, Kabayan already has Group 1 form over the mile when beaten by the narrowest of margins by Sizzling in the TJ Smith in Brisbane last season.
No other horse in the Stan Fox this year is under $10 in the markets but the next best fancied are:
- David Hayes-trained stakes winning Redoute’s Choice filly Mama’s Choice ($15) with the inside alley
- John Thompson’s Casino Prince colt Trophies ($16) who ran six lengths away second to Proisir in the Group 3 Spring Stakes over the Newcastle mile last week
- Kiwi raider Magic Shaft ($17) from the Matamata stables of John Sargent, the gelding having finished second to Choice Bro in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce takes back in March before resuming when a distant ninth to Tatra in the Listed Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Warwick Farm on September 8
Anthony Cummings’ late entry Fiveandahalfstar ($61) and Bart Cummings’ lightly-raced colt Divine Moon ($81) round out the markets.
Fiveandahalfstar proved to their trainer they were worthy of a shot in a Saturday stakes race when they ran a credible sixth at Canterbury on Wednesday, Cummings hopeful they can develop into a 2012 Victoria Derby chance this November during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
