Ross Stitt’s Taree galloper Southern Shimmer is set to jump the short-priced favourite in this afternoon’s Lismore Cup 2012, the smart stayer out for the Dubbo Cup – Lismore Cup double.
Five-year-old Southern Shimmer, who shares the sire Southern Image with reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, won the Dubbo Cup over the mile last start on September 16 and is now the top elect to take out the $45,000 XXXX Gold Lismore Cup (2100m) today.
Paying $2.70 in the current Lismore Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au the country cups’ specialist sees the track for the first time, has barrier 11 of 14, and the 59kg topweight to overcome but the bookies are taking no chances.
Stitt is well aware that Southern Shimmer is yet to win over the 2100m, but they ran an unlucky second to The Paymaster in August’s Taree Cup (2000m) with 58kg from barrier 15 of 15, and further back in May caught the eye when a close fourth to Coliseo in the Listed Wagga Cup (2000m).
“He gets back early a touch but that shouldn’t be too much of a hassle,” Stitt said.
“In the shorter races it helps being up on the bunny but over longer, the leaders get tired and he’ll get his chance.
“If he brings his Wagga form to Lismore, he should just blow them away.”
Southern Shimmer will be ridden today by Australia’s most successful jockey Robert Thompson who has ridden more winners than any other hoop in the country, the horse out to follow in the footsteps of Stitt’s dual Lismore Cup winner Precise Timing (2006-2007).
Stitt is more than happy with the condition of his horse heading into the race but admits the rise from 54kg in the Dubbo Cup to 59kg today is steeper than he would have liked.
“Being a quality I thought he might have got a kilo less but there is not much we can do about it,” Stitt said.
“This is the race I have set him for.
“It’s probably 1kg more than I thought but something has got to carry 59kg in these quality handicaps.
“Weight won’t stop him.”
Southern Shimmer had an exhibition galloper in between races at Port Macquarie last Sunday and Thompson, aboard for the run, was all smiles – pleased with what they gave him.
“Robert Thompson got off with a smile and said ‘don’t worry Ross he’ll win a maiden’,” Stitt said.
“I’m very happy with him. It was good work.”
There are just two other single figure chances in the Lismore Cup 2012 field and betting markets at present with They Won’t Last ($4) and Buffett ($6) drawn in barriers three and four respectively.
John Thompson’s Elvstroem six-year-old They Won’t Last has run two close seconds at Doomben over 2200m this month and look in prime form dropping back to 2100m this afternoon in their first NSW run since August last year.
Buffet meanwhile gets into the race on the 54kg minimum, Bruce Hill’s veteran Gold Coast galloper coming off the same two Brisbane races as They Won’t Last having run third and fourth respectively.
Other longer-priced chances not without their claims for the Lismore Cup win include Easy Rocking eight-year-old Blinkin Easy ($11), Coffs Harbour galloper Castlemagne King ($12) who ran second in the Byron Bay Cup two back, and four-year-old Byron Bay Cup third placed Zippy Zariz ($17) who has already racked up 44 career starts.
