Favourite Excluded – 2012 JRA Cup Odds

The dynamic owner – trainer duo of Lloyd Williams and Robert Hickmott are out in force again this spring with a strong team of stayers heading towards the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups including the exciting Excluded who is hot favourite for this Friday night’s JRA Cup 2012.

Precedence

Precedence is second favourite for Friday night's 2012 JRA Cup

A son of High Chaparral, five-year-old Excluded is one of 16 acceptors for the $200,000 Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m), the field made up of 14 starters and two emergencies.

Coming off back-to-back Melbourne wins, the most recent of which was over 2000m at Flemington on September 8, Excluded is also the clear favourite in the JRA Cup betting markets at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.80 to make it three on the trot.

They race in black-type company for just the second time with their only other stakes start being their close fifth to Echoes Of Heaven in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas last year.

With strong form up to 2800m having run a close second to Norsqui in a Melbourne Cup Day feature at Flemington over that distance last spring, Excluded is this year heading towards the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20.

They currently pay $26 in the Caulfield Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au, a price that is sure to firm should they win the JRA Cup on Friday and earn a ballot free ride into the Group 1 classic.

Just three other horses are at single-figures in the JRA Cup 2012 odds with:

  • #1 Precedence ($6) – Bart Cummings-trained topweight (58kg), this Zabeel seven-year-old has 41 starts to their name but still know how to win as proven by their effort last start over the Moonee Valley mile when defeating Spacecraft with 60.5kg
  • #13 Fruehling ($6.50) – Anthony Freedman’s progressive four-year-old has won four from eight to date, including a good first-up effort carrying 60ikg to victory at Mornington on September 12, this former Sir Michael Stoute-trained import hasn’t raced in black type company yet but having winning form up to 2400m
  • #5 Dance With Her ($8.50) – Al Maher mare ran second in the Brisbane Cup during the winter, was in great form last season and should be better on second-up here after their credible fifth to Southern Speed when resuming over the mile in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes

Other longer-priced hopefuls not without their claims then include the Peter Moody-trained Danewin six-year-old King Diamond ($10), their former Kiwi-trained stablemate Guns At Five ($13), and Jake Stephens’ veteran stayer Alcopop ($13).

Out of Moody’s fancied duo the ace Victorian horseman believes King Diamond is his best chance, the former Mark Kavanagh-trained galloper having raced competitively against these types over this distance previously.

“The way he worked this week makes me think he’s made the greater improvement,” Moody said.
