Current Epsom Handicap second pick Fat Al has opened the odds-on favourite to win the Shannon Stakes 2012 at Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday, Gai Waterhouse’s progressive four-year-old racing second-up for the season.
A dual Group 3 winner during April at Randwick winning the Carbine Club Stakes – Frank Packer Plate double over 1600m and 2000m respectively, Al Maher gelding Fat Al resumed racing at Rosehill on September 15.
In that run they came within a long neck of Ambidexter in the Group 2 Theo Marks Sprint (1400m) and on Saturday they will step up to 1500m for the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes.
Their imposing autumn form and obvious mile potential has seen Fat Al open top of the Shannon Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au, the rails-drawn shortie paying $1.30 to defeat their seven rivals in the handicap clash despite carrying the 58kg topweight.
The only other Shannon Stakes hopeful under double figures in the latest markets is then 57kg second topweight Rolling Pin drawn in gate eight with Corey Brown to ride.
Gwenda Markwell’s Pins five-year-old pays $8 to upset the favourite, Rolling Pin coming off a tight win in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle from last week when carrying just 54kg.
Occupying the third line of Shannon Stakes betting are then Offenders and Darci Be Good paying $11 each, both gallopers drawn nicely in gates two and four respectively.
The Peter Snowden-trained Offenders ran a good third in the Cameron Handicap and drop a kilo for this carrying the 53kg minimum on Saturday.
Bede Murray’s Darci Brahma four-year-old Darci Be Good meanwhile hasn’t finished in the money since their good second to Doctor Doom in last year’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick.
After a below par autumn against the best of their kind however there is a chance they will come back this time in getting up in distance, the gelding having run three lengths away seventh in the Cameron Handicap.
Murray said their Cameron run could have been much better had he talked tactics with jockey Corey Brown pre-race, and that they wouldn’t miss the opportunity to discuss the race plan with the horse’s Shannon Stakes hoop Tommy Berry.
“They went slow (in the Cameron Handicap) and Corey hadn’t been on the horse before,” Murray explained.
“I actually thought after they’d gone around to the barriers, `I should have told him if the pace was slow to ride him a bit closer’.
“He gave him a great run just off the pace but the way the race was run it didn’t suit him.
“He’s a bit of a grinder rather than a horse with a sprint.
“It depends on the pace of the race but if it’s not truly run he can be closer to the speed and I’ll make sure I give Tommy the right instructions.”
