Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A strong field has been named to contest the only Group 1 race of the weekend with 15 accepting for the $400,000 2012 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Sunday.

Pinwheel

Pinwheel is chasing his first Group 1 in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

Included is in-form Darley gelding Pinwheel who will be chasing a third consecutive win and his first at Group 1 level.

The seven-year-old heads into the race on the back of wins in the Group 3 Missile Stakes and the Group 2 Warwick Stakes last month.

Last year’s Mackinnon Stakes winner Glass Harmonium will be having his first start of the spring after failing to make an impact in two autumn starts.

The seven-year-old who has won more than $1 million in prizemoney will kick off his campaign from the inside barrier with Damien Oliver aboard.

A number of horses will be stepping up for their first test at Group 1 level including four-year-old Shanghai Warrior and Queensland gelding Solzhenitsyn.

Shanghai Warrior will need to bounce back from an uncharacteristic poor showing in the Bobbie Lewis but showed he is ready to make the next step last month when winning the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m).

Solzhenitsyn arrives in the Victorian capital chasing a fourth consecutive victory with a successful winter carnival backed up by a one-length over Bold Glance in his first-up run at Doomben earlier this month.

We’re Gonna Rock is another in-form horse contesting Sunday’s feature race after edging out Spirit Of Boom in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 8.

Leading trainer Peter Moody has accepted with two runners including four-year-old Moment Of Change who won the Lised Show County Quality first up before finishing third in the Group 3 Tramway Handicap (1400m).

Other Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes contestants include PB Lawrence Stakes winner Second Effort, the Anthony Freedman-trained Smokin’ Joey and David Payne’s Centennial Park.
