Precedence Tops JRA Cup Field 2012

Bart Cummings’ last start winning veteran Precedence tops a full 2012 JRA Cup field full of spring cup hopefuls that will face off in the last at Moonee Valley on Friday night.


Moonee Valley specialist Precedence is the 2012 JRA Cup topweight

Due to run as Moonee Valley Race 8 at 10:15pm, this year’s edition of the $200,000 Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) has drawn a capacity field of 14 starters plus two emergencies.

Top weight of the JRA Cup 2012 field is Zabeel seven-year-old Precedence with 58kg, the Michael Rodd mount having won at the track of the mile last time out on September 15.

Precedence is out for multiple wins in the race having taken out the JRA Cup back in 2010.

A bit of a track specialist at the Valley they also won the Group 2 MV Gold Cup here back in the spring of 2010 before seeing it for the first time since last start.

The JRA Cup winner will be exempt from ballot for the 2012 Caulfield Cup, the $2.65 million handicap to run at Caulfield on October 20.

All but five of the 16 JRA Cup acceptors were among the 80 Caulfield Cup second declarations taken by Racing Victoria yesterday.

The shortest priced of the hopefuls in the current Caulfield Cup betting markets is the Robert Hickmott-trained Excluded paying around $26.

Drawn in gate 10 for Saturday with top jockey Craig Williams engaged for the ride, the High Chaparral five-year-old has won their last two races on the trot with a 1519m handicap at Moonee Valley on August 25 followed by a 2000m handicap at Flemington on September 8.

The rest of the JRA Cup horses are roughies in the online Caulfield Cup odds including the Anthony Freedman-trained Fruehling ($51), last year’s Victoria Derby third placed Sabrage ($67) and Precedence ($81).

Azamour stallion Fruehling coming off a first-up win over the mile at Mornington is one of four last-start winners in the JRA Cup field along with Precedence, Excluded and Bianmick who won over 1800m at Sandown on September 19.

Other notable hopefuls include one-time Melbourne Cup favourite Alcopop, smart Al Maher mare Dance With Her who ran second in the Brisbane Cup during the winter, and the Shaune Ritchie-trained New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Artistic.
