Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the top fancies for Saturday week’s Epsom Handicap, Fat Al lines up for their latest assignment in the 2012 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.
The smart Gai Waterhouse-trained Al Maher four-year-old is one of just eight horses accepted to contest the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) on Saturday, Fat Al using the race as their final preparatory run for the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on October 6.
On the rails in barrier one with Nash Rawiller to ride Fat Al is the current $6.50 second elect behind Shoot Out ($6) in the Epsom Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au, but if they lose on Saturday that price will blow right out.
A winner of five of their eight starts to date Fat Al resumed after a four and a half month break on September 15 and caught the eye with a close second to Ambidexter in the Group 2 Theo Marks Sprint (1400m), the dual Group 3 victor set to improve second-up on Saturday.
They will have to handle the 58kg topweight in the handicap clash having carried 56kg in the Theo Marks, however Fat Al proved he could handle weight when winning the Albury Guineas as a three-year-old last March with 59.5kg on their back.
Drawn at the other end of the Shannon Stakes field in gate eight is then Gwenda Marwell’s last-start Cameron Handicap winner Rolling Pin who will be ridden by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown.
Other notable Shannon Stakes 2012 chances include the Peter Snowden-trained Cameron Handicap third placegetter Offenders (barrier two), Group 1 performed Darci Be Good and Australian Oaks runner-up Aliyana Tilde.
Anthony Cummings meanwhile has accepted for Upbeat, and the John Thompson-trained stablemates Pane In The Glass and Levi’s Choice complete the Shannon Stakes field this year.
The complete field and barriers along with jockeys and weights are detailed below.
