Glencadam Gold Gets 1.5kg Caulfield Cup 2012 Weight Penalty

Gai Waterhouse’s exciting import Glencadam Gold was yesterday awarded a 1.5kg 2012 Caulfield Cup weight penalty by Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter for their impressive victory in the Newcastle Gold Cup last week.

Folding Gear

Naturalism Stakes winner Folding Gear has been penalised 1kg for the 2012 Caulfield Cup

The Refuse To Bend four-year-old has won all three of their starts in Australia since joining Waterhouse’s Tulloch Lodge stables in Sydney at the start of the year and it is full steam ahead to the $2.65 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 20.

After their good one and three quarter length win over Permit in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill at the start of the month, Glencadam Gold further proved their staying potential last Thursday beating home Peal Of Belles in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m).

The Newcastle Cup has proved a nice form race for the Caulfield edition with last year’s winner Green Moon going on to run a brave second to Southern Speed in the Caulfield Cup carrying 53kg after just sneaking into the field with their 0.5kg weight penalty and the weights having been raised 2.5kg at acceptance stage.

Glencadam Gold’s 1.5kg Caulfield Cup penalty takes their total to 51.5kg for the world’s richest mile and a half handicap, and they are still in serious danger of missing out on a start sitting equal 52nd in the order of entry – up from 67th.

Waterhouse will look to get them into the Caulfield Cup field by winning Saturday week’s $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick, Glencadam Gold currently the $7 second favourite for the Epsom Handicap Day feature behind last weekend’s Hill Stakes winner Lamasery ($4.40).

Glendcadam Gold meanwhile is a $31 chance in the latest Caulfield Cup odds at

Carpenter also penalized them 1.5kg for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 6 at Flemington, their total weight for the ‘race that stops a nation’ now 51.5kg.

“Glencadam Gold is a progressive stayer who is now unbeaten in three Australian starts,” Carpenter said.

“His win in the Premiers Cup prior to the weights being released has been enhanced by the subsequent form of Stout Hearted and he was able to carry top weight, lead and dictate the speed in the Newcastle Cup when winning easily.”

Another galloper penalised for a recent win in the Caulfield Cup weights yesterday was the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Seymour stayer Folding Gear.

The Johar five-year-old is exempt from Caulfield Cup ballot after winning the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield last Saturday, Carpenter giving them an extra 1kg to take their weight up to 52kg.

“Folding Gear has an outstanding record at Caulfield having won the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) as a three-year-old, the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) as a four-year-old and now the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes as a five-year-old against a very competitive field,” Carpenter said.

Along with Folding Gear the other horses exempt from Caulfield Cup penalty are Southern Speed, Happy Trails and Norsqui.

The third and final horse with a Caulfield Cup weight penalty at this stage is then the Chris Waller-trained import Stout Hearted who is now set to carry 51kg after a 1kg penalty for their Group 3 Kingstown Town Stakes (2000m) win back on September 15.

Stout Hearted was last seen finishing fourth to Lamasery in the Hill Stakes last Saturday and sitting equal 61st on the Caulfield Cup ballot, are only an $81 chance for the big clash.

Second acceptances for the 2012 BMW Caulfield Cup will be taken this afternoon cutting down the current list of 116 hopefuls.

Currently last year’s runner-up Green Moon is the $14 favourite from December Draw and Southern Speed at $16 – the latter two having run third and fourth behind Cox Plate-bound Ocean Park in the Underwood Stakes last Saturday.
