After earlier concerns reigning Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden could miss this year’s 2012 Caulfield Cup due to a foot abscess, trainer Mikel Delzangles has confirmed the French champion is now a 100 percent chance for the early spring feature down under.
Nicobar stallion Dunaden developed a foot abscess about two weeks ago with questions arising over their fitness for the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m), confirmed by connections as a target for the seven-year-old, as they have been forced to go through light work only over the past fortnight.
Delzangles has since come out and quashed rumours Dunaden would not be right for the Caulfield Cup 2012, for which they are currently the $17 co-third favourite for with Manighar, saying they would be galloping at Newmarket Racecourse this week before jumping on a plane to Melbourne at the end of the week.
“Mikel told me last night the horse is fine and will have a gallop at Newmarket this week before he gets on the plane,” Racing Victoria’s international talent scout and manager Leigh Jordon said.
“According to him, if the horse travels well, he runs at Caulfield.”
Delzangles himself confirmed the information saying the abscess had broken and the horse was well and truly on the mend.
“He has had a foot abscess but he’s comfortable now and should be OK,” he said.
“Unless the problem comes back, he will go for the Caulfield Cup.
“He is leaving on Thursday (Friday AEST time) for Australia. It did hold him up in his work, but that was two weeks ago and everything is fine again now.”
Duanden will be joined by 15 other internationals in Australia on Saturday including 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain and the fellow Alain de Royer Dupre-trained Shawardi.
More overseas raiders will then enter quarantine in Victoria two weeks later including the Dermot Weld-trained Galileo’s Choice, while Godolphin’s hopefuls will be on a private flight from England towards the end of October.
Dunaden was one of 80 2012 Caulfield Cup second acceptances taken by Racing Victoria today.
