Caulfield Cup 2012 Second Acceptances – 80 Stayers Left

Second acceptances for the 2012 Caulfield Cup, the first of the three Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors, have been taken by Racing Victoria today with 80 stayers left in contention.

Green Moon

Early favourite Green Moon was one of 80 2012 Caulfield Cup second acceptors

At first declaration stage 116 stayers were still in contention for the $2.65 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday October 20, a figure that is now down to the exact number of second acceptors as 12 months ago.

The top 14 favourites in the pre-second declaration Caulfield Cup betting markets at have all been paid up for and remain in the mix for the world’s richest mile and a half handicap.

Dominating the Caulfield Cup 2012 odds are second acceptors:

  • Green Moon (Robert Hickmott) – Second in the feature last year looks on track for a big spring after just getting nudged out of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes second-up
  • December Draw (Mark Kavanagh) – Last year’s beaten favourite broke down in the Caulfield Cup 12 months ago but looked to have returned to their best when third to Ocean Park in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes last Saturday second-up after an 11 month spell
  • Southern Speed (Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas) – Defending Caulfield Cup winner has history against her to go back-to-back this spring but is still one of the top fancies after her good early season runs including the Makybe Diva Stakes victory over Manighar and her Underwood fourth
  • Dunaden (Mikel Delzangles) – Reigning Melbourne Cup winner will go to the Caulfield Cup as well this year, hasn’t raced since July back in Britain and some recent concerns over a foot abscess, but their trainer is happy and they jump on a plane to Melbourne this Friday
  • Manighar (Peter Moody) – Moody’s triple Group 1 winning import ran an unlucky sixth in the Underwood second-up but is tipped for improvement as they go up in distance
  • Lamasery (David Vandyke) – Shot into Caulfield Cup contention this year winning the Group 2 Hill Stakes at Randwick last Saturday, missed the spring cups last year due to injury and will be out to amend
  • Voila Ici (Peter Moody) – Former Italian stayer now with Moody in Melbourne caught the eye in their second run down under finishing a close second to Ocean Park in the Underwood with more improvement to come

Aside from Dunaden the other more notable internationally-trained horses among the 2012 Caulfield Cup second declarations include:

  • Jakkalberry (Mark Botti) – English-trained galloper owned by Aussie connections, last seen running away to win the American St Leger in Arlington by a good margin, share purchased by OTI with an eye on the Melbourne Cup
  • Mount Athos (Luca Cumani) – Smart Montjeu gelding won their last three straight back home including the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2670m) by three and a half in August, fancied for the Melbourne Cup as well
  • Quest For Peace (Luca Cumani) – Another Cumani Cups hope owned by OTI, the Galileo stallion won their two most recent last month at the Goodwood including a black type over 2816m

Meanwhile some of the more notable non-acceptors at Caulfield Cup 2012 second declaration stage include:

  • Drunken Sailor (Michael Moroney) – Adelaide Cup runner-up finished dead last in the Underwood first-up last Saturday
  • Happy Trails (Paul Beshara) – Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner will go to the 2012 Cox Plate and bypass the 2400m Caulfield Cup
  • Rialya (Lloyd Kennewell) – Adelaide Cup winner failed to come on this time in including their below par ninth in the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday, the winner of which was given a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption

2012 Caulfield Cup third declarations are due out on October 9 before the final field is released on October 16.
