Peter Snowden has confirmed his evergreen seven-year-old Pinwheel will vie for their maiden Group 1 turf triumph this Sunday when they take on four-time elite level champ Mosheen in the 2012 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse.
The sole Group 1 feature of the weekend, the $400,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) is shaping up as a top event this year with Lonhro gelding Pinwheel sure to be one of the sentimental favourites as they look to finally break their elite level duck.
Twelve months ago Pinwheel ran a disappointing 13th behind Toorak Toff in the feature after slipping at the start and will be out for atonement this season, Snowden having set them this assignment many months ago.
“He’ll head to Caulfield for the Rupert Clarke,” Snowden confirmed.
“He ran really well in it last year. He jumped and slipped at the start and was back last.
“He was on his nose for the first two strides.
“Hopefully history doesn’t repeat itself and we can be up on the speed.”
The always honest galloper, fourth to Mid Summer Music in the Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane during the winter, enjoyed a stellar comeback last month winning both of their August starts at Warwick Farm.
First-up they put an easy one and three quarter lengths on Centennial Park in the Group 3 Missile Stakes (1200m) before going on to defeat reigning Epsom Handicap winner Secret Admirer by half a length in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).
They return head to Melbourne this weekend seeking their third straight success this time stepping up to elite level company for the Sir Rupert, Snowden having kept them in work since the Warwick Stakes including their fourth in a Rosehill trial over 1030m on September 18.
Snowden enjoyed a good start to the spring season earlier this month when his dynamic young duo of Epaulette and Albrecht ran the quinella in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m).
Both race again this weekend with Commands colt Epaulette contesting the $175,000 Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), and Up & Coming Stakes winner Albrecht to run in the $175,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
