Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas hopeful Albrecht will look to stake their claims on a trip to Melbourne next month when they race in this Saturday’s 2012 Stan Fox Stakes at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney.
One of two Group 2 features on the Rosehill race card this weekend, the $250,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) has drawn just five entries at nomination stage.
Leading the way is progressive Redoute’s Choice colt Albrecht who came within a long neck of their stablemate Epaulette in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) earlier this month.
Prior to their second in the Golden Rose Albrecht enjoyed a Group 3 win in the Up & Coming Stakes over 1300m at Warwick Farm and will use the Stan Fox as a possible lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne on October 13.
“I originally thought it would be too much for him, it is still really only his first preparation and might have just been all too soon,” Snowden said.
“But I’ve been really impressed with how he has bounced back from the Golden Rose, you’d barely know that he has had a run.
“I’ll assess him after Saturday but there is a genuine chance he could end up in Melbourne.”
Albrecht and Epaulette are currently the equal $11 third picks in the Caulfield Guineas odds, a price that will firm should either win this weekend – Epaulette running in the Guineas Prelude in Melbourne.
“The plan was always to have him race in to fitness and be at his peak for his fourth run so even though he won a Group 1 at his last start, he should have improvement to come,” Snowden said of Epaultte.
“He surprised me how well he looked leading into the Golden Rose, his coat really came on and he raced accordingly.”
The other notable Stan Fox Stakes nominee in the diminutive list of hopefuls for Saturday meanwhile is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kabayan.
Coming off a fifth in the Golden Rose when beaten three and a half lengths, three-year-old Hardasun gelding Kabayan was the close runner-up to Sizzling in the Group 1 TJ Smith over the Eagle Farm mile during the winter.
They resumed this year with a second to Lady Of Harrods in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, a performance enhanced by Lady Of Harrod’s subsequent Thousand Guineas Prelude win over Commanding Jewel at the track last weekend.
Kabayan is also heading towards the Caulfield Guineas 2012 and pays around $26 in the latest online markets.
John Sargent has then nominated for former Kiwi galloper Magic Shaft, Group 1 placed back in NZ in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes during the autumn, while the John Thompson-trained duo of Maury and Trophies round out the 2012 Stan Fox Stakes nominations.
