2012 Shannon Stakes Nominations Feature Epsom Hopes

This Saturday Rosehill Gardens will come to life with four Group races to run, one of which is the Shannon Stakes 2012 where a number of Epsom Handicap hopefuls are due to face off.

Fat Al

Epsom Handicap favourite Fat Al runs in the 2012 Shannon Stakes this weekend

The $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) has this year attracted just 11 nominations, two which come off a last-start victory with the Peter Snowden-trained Ambidexter and Gwenda Markwell’s Kembla Grange galloper Rolling Pin.

Four-year-old Commands stallion Ambidexter resumed after a four and a half month break to beat home Fat Al in the Group 2 Theo Marks Sprint (1400m) and on Saturday they look to maintain their unbeaten status this time in.

Snowden has also nominated for his Canny Lad seven-year-old Offenders in the Shannon Stakes 2012 who comes off a good third to Rolling Pin in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m).

Ambidexter is currently paying around $15 in the futures markets for the upcoming $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) which runs at Royal Randwick on October 6.

The shortest-priced of the Shannon Stakes nominations in the futures Epsom Handicap odds however is $6 favourite Fat Al.

Gai Waterhouse’s smart Al Maher four-year-old has won five of their eight starts to date, three at Group level, and were only narrowly beaten when second to Ambidexter first-up in the Theo Marks.

Saturday will be their last run before the Epsom Handicap and if they lose this weekend they are likely to blow out in their price for the Group 1 feature.

Other notable Shannon Stakes entries this year include Kerry Parker’s Australian Oaks runner-up Aliyana Tilde who is still likely looking for more distance, the David Payne-trained seven-year-old Centennial Park who ran fourth in the Theo Marks, and John Thompson’s recent Tramway Handicap winner Tagus.
