Strength began the race well, leading the field for the majority of the 1,800 metre race, but could not hold on for the finish and ultimately placed last.

It’s a Dundeel sat at the rear of the field for most of the 2012 Gloaming Stakes, before demonstrating his turn of foot to win the race by more than a length.

Honorius placed in second, while Lunar Rise passed the post in third.

Jockey James McDonald was aboard the New Zealander for his 2012 Gloaming Stakes win.

“He’s improved a lot since his last start,” McDonald said.

“He won real easy in the end”

“He’s just going to love (a mile and a half).

“He just keeps improving and improving and he’s got such a spring in his step.”

Trainer Murray Baker was thrilled that It’s a Dundeel was able to make the successful jump in grade to Group racing.

Baker will next line the promising colt up in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Royal Randwick on October 6, 2012.

“It’s a sign of a good horse when they keep stepping up,” Baker said.

“He was up in grade today.

“Hopefully we can get him down to Melbourne and he can run good (sic) in the Spring Champion.”
