Folding Gear Earns Caulfield Cup Entry With 2012 Naturalism Stakes Win

Folding Gear has gained ballot exemption into the Group 1 Caulfield Cup with a win in the 2012 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse today.

Folding Gear has earned a ballot exemption for the Caulfield Cup after winning the 2012 Naturalism Stakes

The Johar gelding won the race ahead of second place-getter Mr O’Ceirin and Exceptionally, who placed third in the 2012 Naturalism Stakes.

Folding Gear has won four of his 14 race starts and has earned more than $350,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

Co-trainer Shannon Hope revealed that a 2012 Caulfield Cup start was not yet a certainty.

“At this stage we’re aiming at it,” Hope said.

“We’ll just see how he comes through it.

“It’s not the end of the world if we don’t get there.

“We’ll just see how he pulls up.

“I won’t have another run into it. I don’t think he needs it.”

Jockey Ben Melham will have to get down to under 51 kilograms to ride Folding Gear in the 2012 Caulfield Cup on October 20, 2012.

Melham does not feel he would have a problem getting down to the required weight.

“Look I’d say (I could do it). It’s probably worthwhile,” Melham said.

“He’s got a bit of class about him.”
