Gloaming Stakes 2012 – Preview and Tips

While the majority of horses in the 2012 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) are not big names, it is worth following as many emerge to go on to bigger spring three-year-old events.

Just seven horses will line up in the Group 3 event with many entered to try and press their claims for berths in races such as the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes or the Victoria Derby.

Golden Rose fourth placegetter Ninth Legion ($3.20) currently heads the market ahead of New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel ($3.40), Bart Cummings’ Lunar Rise ($3.80) and Ming Dynasty third placegetter Honorius ($5.50).

The Winner

#3 It’s A Dundeel $3.40

This Murray Baker-trained colt has so much potential and looks a born winner. Arrived in Australia earlier this spring with one win from one start and that now stands at three from three.

Despite only being midweek events, the talented three-year-old beat older horses on unsuitable tracks with stunning last-to-first finishes.

A big, roomy Randwick track and a long straight to finish off should help the colt formerly known as Dundeel keep his streak alive.

The Placing

#5 Lunar Rise $3.80

Just a seven-horse field here so no third dividend but we are quite keen on Lunar Rise to take second spot.

Has improved with every step up in distance so far including a dominant five-length win at Newcastle over 1500m at Newcastle on September 8 so should again appreciate the step up here.
