The 2012 Gloaming Stakes market has now been released and the betting suggests it will be a very open affair.
Just seven horses will contest the three-year-old Group 3 event with fourof those runners falling between $3.00 and $6.00.
Anthony Cummings-trained colt Ninth Legion is the current bookmaker.com.au favourite at $3.20 but is only slightly ahead of unbeaten colt It’s A Dundeel ($3.40).
The Murray Baker-trained three-year-old has scored two last-to-first victories since arriving in Australia but faces his toughest test this week in first step up to stakes level.
Baker admits Saturday provides a far tougher test than the midweek wins at Wyong and Canterbury but believes the big Randwick track will play into his favour.
“Canterbury is not a track that suits him and the rail was out so we were pleased to see him hit the line like he did,” Baker said.
“It’s a big ask for him to win and there are some smart three year olds in there on Saturday.
“Barrier one shouldn’t worry him, he will probably drop out anyway and Randwick is a nice big track and the gaps will come for him.”
Following the top pair closely in the bettering is in-form Bart Cummings-trained gelding Lunar Rise ($3.80) who is chasing a third straight win and is coming off a five-length romp at Newcastle on September 8.
The other horse featuring under double figures is Honorius ($5.50) who has won two of eight starts and was most recently seen running third to Tatra in the Ming Dynasty two weeks ago.
The three other Gloaming Stakes contenders are King Of Olympia ($13.00), Rowie ($14.00) and Strength ($41.00).
