Joe Pride’s Group 1 performer Rain Affair will shoot for a dozen turf triumphs this weekend when they jump the favourite in The Shorts 2012 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick as part of the George Main Stakes Day action.
Bringing the meeting to a close as Randwick Race 8 at 5:20pm the $200,000 Group 1 The Shorts (1200m) has this year drawn a crack field of 17 hopefuls, the current bookmaker.com.au favourite for which is Commands five-year-old Rain Affair paying $3.70.
Drawn in barrier two of 17 with regular rider Corey Brown reuniting with them, Rain Affair runs second-up for the season following a credible fourth to stablemate Tiger Tees in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm two weeks ago.
That was just the second time in their 16-start career to date that Rain Affair didn’t finish top three and Brown is confident they can bounce back with a win in The Shorts when he rides him for the first time since their close second to Master OF Design in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick back in April.
“Obviously everyone walked away scratching their heads after the other day,” Brown said of Rain Affair’s career worst run in the Concorde.
“He pulled up a tiny bit muscle sore which is not out of the ordinary but they couldn’t find any problems.
“Joe has said he has come right on since that run. The old Rain Affair, the one that we’ve seen before last start, is a super-competitive horse and it was totally out of character how he raced the other day.
“So if he’s back to his old self he’ll be hard to beat but I’m just hoping at this point.”
Despite the size of the field just four other runners are under $10 in The Shorts betting markets with:
- #5 Nobby Snip ($7) – Widely drawn in gate 14 Gai Waterhouse’s Snippetson’s four-year-old resumes after a five month break, second to Temple Of Boom in the Group 1 The Galaxy and won three straight before that so has consistency and class but can be hit-and-miss first-up
- #1 Manawanui ($8) – Last year’s Golden Rose winner has gate 13 to overcome as well as the 58.5kg equal topweight but the Ron Leemon-trained son of Oratorio is a class galloper with a good record when resuming
- #6 Pampelonne ($8) – Well fancied despite their horror barrier 15 draw Tim Martin’s Flemington visitor hasn’t raced since their brave fourth in the Doomben 10,000 prior to which they won three on the trot in Sydney including the Listed Gosford Guineas and the Scone 3YO Guineas, sees Randwick for the first time
- #17 Emotional Circus ($8) – Also in double-digit gates having drawn 12 this Elusive Quality mare is third-up for the season after two eye-catching runs at Rosehill having won first-up before her close fourth behind glamour mare More Joyous in last Saturday’s Sheraco Stakes
There is then a handful of other horses under $20 in the markets that aren’t without their claims including Eagle Farm raider Spirit Of Boom ($14) who has work to do from the extreme outside gate but who ran a cracker to come within a short half-head of We’re Gonna Rock when second from barrier 18 of 19 in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality over 1200m at Flemington first-up a fortnight ago, the Steve Englebrecht-trained Snitzel gelding Malavio ($17) racing for the first time since their black type win at Rosehill back on June 30, and Anthony Cummings’ improving Canny Lad mare Ever The Same ($17).
