Nocturnelle Too Strong in 2012 Tibbie Stakes

Chris Waller-trained mare Nocturnelle produced a stunning form reversal to win the Listed 2012 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle today.

The four-year-old finished four lengths behind New Beginning when fifth at Rosehill earlier this month but turned the tables this time around to score her first ever stakes victory.

With Glyn Schofield aboard, the daughter of Elusive Quality jumped well from barrier four and was held in a handy position throughout the entire trip and showed toughness to hold off New Beginning and Ron Quinton’s Irish Dream.

Schofield has ridden the four-year-old on a number of occasions and said she was far more relaxed than usual in the fillies and mares’ feature today.

“She’s a work in progress, she’s normally quite uptight and worked up before her run and as you saw today she was much more calm and collected and that obviously transformed into performance,” Schofield said.

“She got that little bit of luck and she accelerated into the gap really well and was never in doubt.

“Sometimes they need that confidence to be happy with what they’re doing and that’s what she’s got now.”

Nocturnelle has always shown promise and now boasts a solid record of five wins and three placings from 11 trips to the track.

The third-place finish for Irish Dream showed her continual ability to perform consistently, having not finished worse than fourth in her seven most recent starts.

Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Miss Stellabelle received no luck in running and had to settle with fourth position.
