Newcastle Cup 2012 – Betting Tips

The bumper two-day 2012 Newcastle Cup carnival continues today with the most anticipated race of the carnival of course the Newcastle Cup.

The scratching of Chris Waller’s Kelinni takes one big gun out of the race while Todd Howlett’s Double Crescent has also been withdrawn.

That leaves nine horses in the field for Newcastle’s premier race which is often a good indicator to bigger staying events later in the spring.

Kelinni’s scratching has seen favourite Glencadam Gold shorten to $1.50 with Gazza Guru ($7.50) and Racing Heart ($9.00) the only other horses to fall under double figures.

Not sure who to back in the Newcastle Cup? Keep reading as the team have been pouring over the form to bring you our very best selections.

The Winner

#1 Glencadam Gold $1.50

Some punters will think it is a shame that Kelinni got scratched as this Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer looked just about a good thing regardless.

After showing toughness to fight out a win over 1550m at Canterbury on Australian debut last month he showed his class to win the Premier’s Cup by two lengths.

With Nash Rawiller aboard, the four-year-old will likely lead and that was a recipe for success on day one of the carnival as the likes of Proisir and Rolling Pin saluted in the features.

The Placings

#5 Gazza Guru $7.50 and #8 Peal Of Bells $10.50

Gazza Guru is as honest as they come and will be giving his all. He’s only won seven times from 70 starts but placed on another 18 occasions and is showing consistent form.

He finished second to Premier’s Cup Prelude and despite being a class below in the Premier’s Cup backed up next start to run a close second to Julienas in the Wyong Cup.

Peal Of Bells has been a touch below what was expected so far this preparation but is fit and ready to produce.

Finished sixth in the Sydney Cup in autumn and that sort of performance is good enough to get him into the top three here.
