Manighar Hot Favourite in 2012 Underwood Stakes Odds

Peter Moody’s Cox Plate-bound galloper Manighar has opened at the top of the Underwood Stakes 2012 odds for this Saturday’s weight-for-age feature at Caulfield Racecourse.

Manighar has opened hot favourite to win the 2012 Underwood Stakes this weekend

Kicking off the Group 1 racing action of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the $400,000 Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) is due to jump at 3:40pm as Caulfield Race 7 on Saturday with a high-class field of 14 staying types, all of which are heading to the Caulfield Cup and or the Cox Plate, engaged to face off.

Pronounced favourite of the Underwood Stakes horses this year in the markets is triple Group 1 winner Manighar paying $2.25 to score their fourth elite level success.

Drawn in gate 10 with Luke Nolen engaged the imported Linamix six-year-old, formerly prepared in Europe by Luca Cumani, is second up for the season after a devastatingly close second to Southern Speed in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington a fortnight ago.

Surprisingly it is not their last start conqueror Southern Speed next in the latest Underwood Stakes betting markets but the Stephen Farley-trained Sincero (barrier 12) paying $5.50.

A dual Group 1 champ Umatilla five-year-old Sincero certainly has the right form heading into their second run for the spring after their emphatic victory over Happy Trails, who went on to win the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last weekend, in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield at the start of the month.

“I know how good the horse is but he’s made other people sit up and take notice with what he did the other day,” Farley said.

“Especially with the form coming out of the Dato and seeing what he had done to them the start before.

“When he’s right, he’s electrifying.

“He looks magnificent.

“His coat has come on nicely. To say how much he’s improved is probably hard to say because his win was sensational the other day.

“He probably doesn’t have to improve much more, does he?”

The three other single-figure chances to upset Manighar in the Underwood Stakes results on Saturday arvo are then Southern Speed ($6.50), the Gary Hennessy-trained Ocean Park ($7) and December Draw ($8.50).

Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas’ reigning Caulfield Cup victor Southern Speed has the fitness factor here having run three times this time in for two wins including her narrow success over Manighar in the Makybe Diva.

Talented young Kiwi four-year-old Ocean Park meanwhile also comes off a black type win having taken out the Group 1 Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m) back home in NZ on September 1 carrying 58.5kg.

December Draw meanwhile is drawn wide in gate 13 with Michael Rodd to ride, Mark Kavanagh’s come back galloper racing for just the second time since breaking down as the beaten favourite in last year’s Caulfield Cup.

The six-year-old Medecis gelding ran a first-up eighth in the Makybe Diva beaten four lengths in their first run in 11 months and is sure to improve as they race second-up over more distance here.

Anthony Freedman’s progressive Tertullian stallion Mawingo, winner of the Doomben Cup over 2000m during the winter, is then the only other runner under $20 in the Underwood Stakes betting markets at paying $12 after their disappointing effort first-up when failing to beat home any of their rivals in the Makybe Diva.
