Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The premier race held at Sydney’s Newcastle Racecourse each year takes place today with the Newcastle Gold Cup 2012 set to light up the track as Race 7 at 4:40pm this afternoon.
Originally the field for the $200,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) attracted 11 hopefuls but the list of confirmed starters is now down to nine following the early scratching of #6 Kelinni and #10 Double Crescent.
Hot favourite and firm market mover in the Newcastle Gold Cup odds at bookmaker.com.au is Gai Waterhouse’s in-form Glencadam Gold who will start from barrier one carrying the 58kg top-weight with ace hoop Nash Rawiller engaged.
Waterhouse, who has prepared four previous Newcastle Gold Cup winners with Emerald Cut (1997), Agincourt Express (2001), Bianca (2008) and Stratofortress (2010), got things going at Newcastle yesterday with two winners including her 2012 Spring Champion Stakes-bound shortie Proisir taking out the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) with a blistering six length effort.
Now her chance of scoring another Group 3 win today are also paying an odds-on price with imported Refuse To Bend four-year-old Glencadam Gold into $1.50 to score their third win on the trot.
The gelding joined Waterhouse’s operation from England earlier this year and has won both of their starts for Sydney’s leading lady of racing including their recent one and three quarter length victory over Permit in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill on September 1.
Admittedly they face a class rise here and also go up four kilos here, but the punters are rallying behind this stayer that is heading towards the $400,000 Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, October 6.
Glencadam Gold is also being targeted at a major Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival Cups campaign, but with 50kg for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups needs to win or run a place today to pass the first ballot clause.
They currently pay $34 in the Caulfield Cup odds for October 20 and are at $51 for the markets on the ‘race that stops a nation’, the 2012 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday November 6.
The Newcastle Gold Cup has served as a nice form race for the spring cups in recent years.
Last year’s Newcastle Gold Cup winner Green Moon went on to run second in the Caulfield Cup, after receiving a half kilo penalty for his victory, and is favourite to go one better and take out the $2.65 million handicap this year.
Following Glencadam Gold in the Newcastle Gold Cup betting markets are then two other single-figure chances with the Stephen Farley-trained Gazza Guru ($7.50) who ran third in the race last year and who has drawn nicely in gate three, and Racing Heart ($9) jumping from barrier eight.
Eight-year-old Street Cry gelding Gazza Guru comes off a close second in the Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) from September 7 and Farley would love to see them rise to the occasion today.
Rob Heathcote’s Brisbane raider Racing Heart meanwhile is after their third straight turf triumph following back-to-back wins at home over 2100m.
Other longer-priced hopefuls with a genuine chance then include the Peter Snowden-trained Yulalona ($10), Gwenda Markwell’s Queanbeyan Cup winner Peal Of Bells ($10) and even the John Thompson-trained Group 3 champ Saint Encosta ($17).
