Glencadam Gold Wins 2012 Newcastle Cup

Odds-on favourite Glencadam Gold justified his price today as he won the 2012 Newcastle Cup (2300m) in dominant style.

With Nash Rawiller in the saddle the Gai Waterhouse-trained import led from start to finish and is still unbeaten from three starts since arriving in Australia.

The only scare came as they approached the home turn when outsider French Gift applied pressure to the leader but he showed his class to hold it together before galloping clear in the straight to finish 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Peal Of Bells and Gazza Guru.

Rawiller was back on board after missing his previous victory in the Premier’s Cup and described the four-year-old as “all class” as he heads towards bigger spring features.

“I ran him along at a genuine clip the whole way and let this horse get into his own rhythm…this bloke’s all class isn’t he,” Rawiller said.

“He’s been well performed over in England and Gai’s put the final touches on him over here and done a terrific job with him.”

While the Group 1 Metropolitan appears a likely option for the Irish-bred stayer, stable foreman Mark Newnham confirmed Waterhouse was also aiming him at the spring’s biggest staying races

“He hasn’t had much racing but what he’s shown us so far is pretty good.”

“Gai really wants to get him qualified for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and the best way to do that is keep winning these races.”

“He’s a really promising galloper. He gets to the front and he just keeps grinding away at them…and I’m sure the further the better for him.”

The win was the fifth for Waterhouse in the Newcastle Cup who also won yesterday’s Spring Stakes with talented colt Proisir.
