The two-day 2012 Newcastle Cup carnival kicks off today and one of features on the opening day is the Group 3 2012 Spring Stakes (1600m).
Restricted to three-year-olds, seven exciting youngsters will line up in the Spring Stakes with the field headed by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir ($1.45).
Only two other horses fall under double figure odds with the Darley-owned Proverb ($5.00) and the Anthony Cummings-trained Shawano ($7.00).
Waterhouse has two chances with Sumarand ($13.00) also lining up as do Darley and Peter Snowden with Limes ($13.00).
The two other horses in the field are Mount Nebo ($31.00) and Patinack’s long-shot outsider Trophies ($71.00).

#2 Proisir $1.45
Not going to win any tipping prizes here but it’s hard to look past the odds-on favourite. Dominant is the word that would be used to describe his first two career starts and a gun inside barrier draw with Rawiller aboard should see that continue here.
After a reasonable two-year-old career Proverb showed first-up in the Ming Dynasty that he has made the transition to a three-year-old when beaten a neck by Tatra in the Ming Dynasty. Should have improved fitness wise and presents the only real challenge to the favourite.
Stablemate Limes won first-up at Gosford before a disappointing effort in the Ming Dynasty. Needs to bounce back but was Group 1 placed as a two-year-old and gets the key gear change of winkers on.
