Rolling Pin Scores Upset Win in 2012 Cameron Handicap

Gwenda Markwell-trained gelding Rolling Pin broke a race record when leading from start to finish to claim victory in the Group 3 2012 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle today.

The five-year-old was rated a $14.00 chance at race jump but was too good for his more highly-rated rivals who were unable to match the slick pace set up front.

With Christian Reith in the saddle, the son of Pins made a stunning form reversal after finishing ninth in his previous start in the Tramway Handicap.

Reith said Rolling Pin travelled beautifully after jumping keenly from barrier five.

“He wanted to fight me a little bit so I just gave him a bit of reign. Got him to relax, got him into his stride and he just felt fantastic,” Reith said.

“It was a tough race today. All credit to Gwenda and her all her staff. The horse turned up in tip-top order and they were rewarded with the win.

“He’s got a lot of improvement left in him and he’s always shown ability this horse.

“It’s good for him to pick up one of these races.”

John O’Shea-trained gelding Lightinthenite came from the back of the field to storm home for second while the Darley-owned Offenders finished in third position.
