Torvill is tipped as the three-year-old filly to...
Gai Waterhouse has kicked off her assault on the Newcastle Gold Cup Carnival on Wednesday taking out the two-day festival’s first black type with star-in-the-making Proisir easily accounting for their rivals in the Spring Stakes 2012.
In an effort that would have made their sire Choisir, one of the Newcatle’s most famous horses, proud the three-year-old colt absolutely bolted away to win the $175,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) by five and a half lengths.
Saluting for the punters as the $1.30 favourite Proisir also staked their claims for the upcoming $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, October 6, which was confirmed by Waterhouse today as their first major spring goal.
Proisir came into the race undefeated in their two starts so far, most recently a two and a half length effort over 1400m at Rosehill at the start of the month, and jockey Nash Rawiller maintained his successful association with them in the Spring Stakes taking the horse’s record to three from three and counting.
One of the best away from the barriers the rails-drawn top elect glided up on the inside to take the early lead from the likes of Mount Nebo and the speedy Shawano who faded to finish dead last.
Leading all the way Proisir recovered quickly each time a rival came within danger territory and really begin to sprint up with 250-metres to go.
They came clear with 50-metres left to travel dashing away to bolt it in by nearly six lengths.
John Thompson’s $101 roughie Trophies, who had a cushy run third on the inside, was the surprise runner-up holding on to take second spot in a photo with the Peter Snowden-trained Proverb ($7) who was only a nose further away in third.
It was a super impressive effort from the Spring Stakes winner who got all the easy sectionals before putting them away easily showing off his superior acceleration and hinting at bigger races to come.
Prior to today’s victory Proisir was already the short-priced favourite in the futures Spring Champion Stakes 2012 odds paying around $3.60, odds that are sure to come right in now.
Rawiller was admittedly impressed with Proisir’s Spring Stakes effort and was excited over where they would go this Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
“I think he’s a very impressive horse he really took the next step today with flying colours,” the hoop said.
“He made his own luck, he travelled comfortably there in front…I was impressed with his last furlong he just quickened really well.
“He’s lovely, got a good personality.
“He’s really going places that’s the main thing.
“I know Gai’s got him for 2000 metres at Randwick which I think will suit him well.”
Waterhouse also thinks the 2000 metres and the Spring Champion Stakes is the right race for Proisir who would not be going to the Caulfield Guineas in Melbourne with star stablemate Pierro but who could earn a trip to Victoria later in the spring.
“He goes to the Spring Champion and then well take him down to Melbourne,” she said.
“He could win the Spring Champion.
“This is always a great race and a great indicator of good horses.
“He just toyed with them today and he won like the short priced favourite he was.”
Last year’s Spring Stakes winner was Darci Be Good who went on to run a very close second to Doctor Doom in the Spring Champion Stakes making today’s race, as Waterhouse said, a good form guide for the upcoming Group 1.
