Manawanui Returns in 2012 The Shorts Field

Last year’s Golden Rose winner Manawanui returns to racing this weekend in what is shaping up as a bumper edition of The Shorts 2012 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Former Golden Rose winner Manawanui races first-up in The Shorts 2012 this Saturday

Rounding out the George Main Stakes Day racing action as Randwick Race 8 at 5:20pm on Saturday, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 The Shorts (1200m) has drawn a total of 17 acceptors.

To wear the number one saddlecloth is the Ron Leemon-trained Manawnaui who has suffered an early blow drawing wide with barrier 13 of 17 for their first run since they finished fifth to Mosheen in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) back in March 17.

Manawanui may be coming off an extended spell and have an 11 month winning drought to overcome in The Shorts but they have a brilliant first-up record and should be competitive even with the 58.5kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions.

Other notable gallopers resuming in The Shorts 2012 this weekend include Stradbroke Handicap third place-getter Happy Zero who has come up trumps with barrier four and Chris Munce to ride, the Tim Martin-trained Pampelonne running for the first time since their sixth in the Doomben 10,000, and Guy Walter’s Group 3 winning mare Appearance.

There are then a number of hopefuls that are sure to be high up The Shorts betting holding the fitness edge over their rivals include the Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom who ran a devastatingly close second first-up to We’re Gonna Rock in the Bobbie Lewis Quality, Clarry Conners’ smart Flying Spur mare Satin Shoes coming off a third to Tiger Tees in the Concorde Stakes, and the Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair.

Commands five-year-old Rain Affair has been one of the most consistent sprinters over the past two seasons winning 11 of their 16 starts and finishing out of the money just twice.

With two close Group 1 second placings to their name from the autumn, Rain Affair ran fourth in the Concorde when resuming at Warwick Farm on September 8 as the beaten odds-on favourite but Pride is confident they will improve on Saturday and be the one to beat in The Shorts.
