Layt Eyes Back-To-Back Heritage Stakes 2012 Success

Queanbeyan horseman Neville Layt is looking down the barrel of his second successive win in the 2012 Heritage Stakes at Royal Randwick this Saturday with his promising young three-year-old Red Excitement looking to follow in the footsteps of their famous stablemate Karuta Queen.

Karuta Queen

Last year's Heritage Stakes winner Karuta Queen went on to win during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival

Layt was thrown into the spotlight when his Not A Single Doubt filly Karuta Queen won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast back in January of 2011, and it was this stable star who won last year’s $100,000 Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m).

On Saturday Layt is back after another Heritage Stakes title this time with Excites gelding Red Excitement who may not have as impressive a CV as Karuta Queen, but who has plenty of untapped talent according to their trainer.

The lightly raced galloper has had seven starts to date for two wins, most recently taking out a 1080m Class 2 at Canberra by three and a half lengths when resuming on August 31.

They face a big class rise this weekend when taking on seven smart rivals in the 2012 Heritage Stakes field including Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 performed Raceway, the undefeated duo of Destruction and Relaxed And Happy, and Group 2 winner Ichihara.

While their three attempts in black type company to date have failed to produce a finish better than sixth place, Layt is happy with the progress of Red Excitement and rates then a top chance in this year’s Heritage.

“He’s an exciting horse, he won with a little bit of authority first run back from a spell and he’s developed up into a nice horse, he could go a long way,” Layt said.

“I trialled him a fortnight beforehand and Grant Buckley rode him in the trial.

“Grant said ‘I ride a lot of Darley’s good horses and I would hold him in the same category as them’. He said this horse is a very serious horse.

“He said he’s running time, but he doesn’t feel like he’s doing it and there was only one other horse that I had that could do that.

“His time was very good he was just outside the course record and he wasn’t pushed.”

Should all go to plan this weekend and Red Excitement steps up to the challenge Layt hopes to take them to Victoria chasing the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival riches the way Karuta Queen did last year.

After her Heritage win Karuta Queen went on to run second behind the world’s best mare in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield, win the Group 3 1300 Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley by three lengths and then run second to African Pulse in a 1000m handicap at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, and it is a similar spring agenda on the cards for Red Excitement.

“Hopefully Red Excitement might take the same path as Karuta Queen,” Layt said.

“If he goes all right we’ll look at a few races down in Melbourne. I think he’s a horse that’s going to go a long way.”

That ‘long way’ could even go as far as the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington Racecourse on Victoria Derby Day, November 3, during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Heritage Stakes 2012 is one of seven stakes races running at Randwick for George Main Stakes Day this weekend and all the odds are due out at our preferred online bookie shortly.
