Gloaming Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A small but exciting field has been named to contest the Group 3 2012 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Just seven horses will line up in the three-year-old feature with many out to press their claims as challengers for next month’s Group 1 2012 Spring Champion Stakes.

One horse who is almost a certainty to head towards the Spring Champion Stakes is New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel who will be out to keep his unbeaten record alive on Saturday.

The Murray Baker-trained three-year-old arrived in Australia with just one start to his name and has since scored two eye-catching wins at Wyong and Canterbury.

Bjorn Baker, son of Murray, said after the most recent win he was looking forward to seeing the emerging stayer over a longer distance on a bigger track and he will get that this weekend.

The son of High Chaparral will be again ridden by regular jockey James McDonald when he comes from the inside barrier on Saturday.

Also coming into the race in form and likely to appreciate the step up in distance is the Bart Cummings-trained Lunar Rise who has won his last two starts including a five-length win at Newcastle on September 8.

Most horses in the field are lightly raced but a couple have black-type experience including David Payne-trained colt Honorius and Anthony Cummings’ Ninth Legion.

Honorius finished third to Tatra in the Ming Dynasty last week while Ninth Legion is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Group 1 Golden Rose.

Other Gloaming Stakes starters include the Gai Waterhouse-trained King Of Olympia, Paul Messara’s Rowie and Patinack-owned colt Strength.
