Quality Fillies in 2012 Thousand Guineas Prelude Nominations

Some of the best three-year-old fillies in the country will be on trial for a start in next month’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday when they line up in the Group 3 2012 Thousand Guineas Prelude(1400m).

Commanding Jewel

Commanding Jewel faces a step up in class in Saturday's Thousand Guineas Prelude

A strong group of 17 horses have been nominated and one that is sure to attract plenty of hype throughout the week is Commanding Jewel.

The three-quarter sister to Atlantic Jewel scored convincing victories in the first two starts of her career but faces a tougher test here in the first step up to stakes level.

Trainer Leon Corstens is looking forward to seeing whether the daughter of Commands can match it better company and stamp herself as a Thousand Guineas contender.

“We have to find out, you can’t dodge them,” Corstens said.

“She’s done absolutely everything I’ve asked from her so far, there’s no reason why she won’t move up a notch on Saturday.”

Among the top chances she will have to overcome are last-start winners Lady Of Harrods and Members Joy.

After struggling when 17 lengths off the pace and last first-up on a heavy track in the Quezette Stakes, Members Joy showed he is a dry track specialist when winning the Listed A’antibes Stakes by two lengths on September 8.

The only horse who beat Members Joy home in the Quezette Stakes was Lady Of Harrods who also bounced back when on top of the ground earlier this month to win the Group 3 McNeil Stakes.

Other horses set to contest the Thousands Guineas include the Robert Smerdon-trained Bloomingdale Miss and Adelaide filly Molto Bene.
