Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Genuine Cox Plate chance Sincero will look to further stake their claims on Australasia’s weight-for-age championship when they race second-up at Caulfield on Saturday in the Underwood Stakes 2012.
The dual Group 1 champion from Wyong impressed trainer Stephen Farley first-up at the start of the month with the five-year-old Umatilla gelding beating home Adelaide galloper Happy Trails by an easy two lengths in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
It was an excellent resuming run and one that’s form was further proven last Saturday when Happy Trails backed up to beat home Memsie Stakes fifth and 10th place-getters Green Moon and Rekindled Interest in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.
“Sincero’s form has held up as the first three home last Saturday came out of the Memsie,” Farley said.
“It certainly makes my horse look pretty good.”
On Saturday Sincero will step out again and take on an even more imposing field of rivals this time in the $400,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
The Underwood Stakes 2012 is shaping up as a supercharged showdown between reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed and Peter Moody’s autumn star Manighar who ran one-two in a photo finish in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 8.
Other notable entries for the weight-for-age features, the first Group 1 of the season in Melbourne, include last start Group 1 winning Kiwi Ocean Park, last year’s beaten Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw and 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday.
Despite the class of their competition Farley remains confident heading into the Underwood with Sincero.
“Sincero has come on since he won the Memsie, he looks sensational,” Farley said.
“The 1800-metres is ideal and the reason I’ve waited three weeks between runs is because I don’t want to give him too many starts before the Cox Plate as he can get dour.
“My plan is to go to the Underwood, another three weeks before the Caulfield Stakes and then at his fourth run this campaign, he goes into the Cox Plate two weeks later.”
The $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) runs on October 13 before the $3 million Group 1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) lights up Moonee Valley Racecourse on October 27.
Sincero is currently rated a $10 chance in the Cox Plate odds at bookmaker.com.au which are led by the undefeated youngster Pierro ($4.60) and Manighar ($6).
In other Underwood Stakes news Moody’s Italian import Voila Ici will be ridden by Vlad Duric on Saturday with Luke Nolen, aboard for the horse’s sixth in the Memsie for their Australian debut, engaged to ride star stablemate Manighar.
“He actually ran quite well first-up I was just watching the replay,” Duric said of Voila Ici.
“It’s heading towards the Caulfield Cup, it’s nominated in all three Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate but on its form its 2400-metre form is really good.”
