Stout Hearted Wins 2012 Kingston Town Stakes

Stout Hearted made it a Chris Waller treble for the day at Rosehill when winning the Group 3 2012 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) in convincing fashion.

The early pace was set by Voice Commander and short-priced favourite Strawberry Boy before the latter assumed the lead on his own approaching the home turn.

With Glyn Schofield aboard, Stout Hearted took advantage of the fast tempo set by the favourite and stormed home to beat Crafty Irna and Strawberry Boy.

The consistent import has now won three of his last four starts and is being targeted at the Group 1 2012 Metropolitan (2400m) on October 6.

“He can either back up next week over 2000 metres and go into the Metrop or race a week before the Metrop over 2400 metres,” Waller said.

“It was a great ride from Glyn, he’s very good with these types of horses.”

Schofield admitted he got some luck in running but praised Stout Hearted’s ability to produce a strong finish.

“Sometimes you bite the bullet and hope for the best and it happens,” he said.

“I was surprised when I let him go I thought he got their way too soon. but conditions sort of eventuated…once he got to the front I had to let him go.”

Since arriving at Waller’s Rosehill stable from the UK, Stout Hearted has won four times from eight starts and is yet to finish worse than fourth.
