Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The 2012 Cox Plate dream is alive for Happy Trails trainer Paul Beshara after a tough win in the Group 2 2012 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley today.
Beshara entered the five-year-old in today’s contest as a trial for a start in the weight-for-age championship of Australasia and he passed with flying colours.
Held just off the pace after jumping from a wide barrier with Glen Boss aboard, Happy Trails produced a fighting finish to win by a nose ahead of Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon.
Beshara was thrilled with the result and did not shy away from declaring the Cox Plate as the major spring target for the son of the Good Journey.
“This is unbelieveable, it’s a dream come true,” Beshara said.
“He puts 150 percent in every time he goes out. We owe him more than he owes us and today that’s a great thing.
“You’d definitely go to the Cox Plate now. That’s your ticket in.”
Star jockey Glen Boss, who was also on board for the runner-up in the Memsie Stakes earlier this month, was more reserved about the gelding’s chances in Australia’s most prestigious weight-for-age race.
“I’m not sure if he can win a Cox Plate this horse,”Boss said.
“He’s got great form around some very, very good horses but not at weight-for-age. This is obviously his first win at weight-for-age.
“I’d more think that the Emirates at the end of the carnival…but it costs you nothing to dream does it?”
Cox Plate placegetter Rekindled Interest showed he is still ready to show something this spring as he took third place.
