Epaulette Scores Upset as Darley Quinella Golden Rose 2012

Darley pair Epaulette and Albrecht produced a flying finish to claim the quinella in today’s Group 1 2012 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill.

Epaulette scores an upset win the the Group 1 Golden Rose 2012

Half way up the straight it looked to be a battle between favourite Nechita and the Anthony Cummings-trained Your Song before the Peter Snowden-trained duo took advantage of a strong tempo to fly down the outside.

They were neck-and-neck and wide on the track as they sprinted to the line but it was the Caulfield Guineas-bound Epaulette who was slightly stronger than his more fancied stablemate.

Snowden was thrilled with the result despite earlier in the week tipping Albrecht to be his stable’s best chance in the first Group 1 race of the season.

“He’s a great colt,” Snowden said.

“That’s the joy of having two in the one race. Who wins, who cares?”

“He goes to the Caulfield Prelude in a fortnight and then to the Guineas and hopefully we can have a crack at Pierro at our best.”

It was a fantastic result for Epaulette rider Tommy Berry who scored his first ever Group 1 win on the son of Commands today.

“It’s unbelievable. I’ve really got to thank Mr Snowden, he’s supported me so much throughout my whole career,” Berry said.

“This is just unreal, to ride a Group 1 winner. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

John O’Shea-trained colt Ashokan took third place honours.
