Bel Sprinter Returns to Win 2012 McEwen Stakes

Jason Warren-trained speedster Bel Sprinter confirmed he is ready for a big spring when winning the Group 3 2012 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley today.

Well known for having barrier issues, there was none of that today as the five-year-old jumped cleanly before sitting just off the pace with regular jockey Ben Melham aboard.

As they rounded the home turn the son of Bel Esprit cruised to the lead to score a convincing victory and take his career record to six wins from nine starts.

An emotional Warren admitted he was thrilled with the performance of the talented gelding who has had to overcome multiple setbacks throughout the early stages of his career.

“It’s tough bringing horses back from little setbacks. It’s great, I couldn’t be happier today,” Warren said.

“It’s just been one small thing after another.

“All the hard work we’ve done improving his manners more than anything and that’s worked. It’s a big thrill.”

The Mornington-based trainer said Bel Sprinter would get a crack at the best sprinters in the land this spring with the 2012 Manikato Stakes the primary target.

“We’re going to the Manikato, that’s been my goal all the way through. I think that Moonee Valley suits him,” Warren said.

Melham was full of praise for the training team to get Bel Sprinter back to his best.

“All the team had to put in the hard yards to get him here today,” he said.

Consistent mare Platelet took second spot while early leader Snitzem finished in third position.
