Newcastle Cup 2012 – Nominations

A strong 18-horse list of nominations have been announced for next Thursday’s Group 3 2012 Newcastle Cup (2300m).

Kelinni

Kelinni is one of two Chris Waller-trained horses entered for the Newcastle Cup

The race is often used as a lead-up to a number of the spring’s big feature staying races and as such has attracted plenty of quality entrants.

Among them is the Gai Waterhouse-trained import Glencadam Gold who has won both of his two starts since arriving in Australia including the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) earlier this month.

Following the strong win ahead of Permit and Stout Hearted Waterhouse declared she would aim the four-year-old at the Melbourne Cup.

“Why not have a go [at the Melbourne Cup]? If we don’t get there, we don’t get there,” she said.

“This is such an exciting stayer in the making. He could go on to some really good things.”

Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller has entered two stayers with Stout Hearted joined by Wyong Cup placegetter Kelinni.

The pair have been in excellent form so far this year as has the Lloyd Williams-owned nomination Excluded.

The New Zealand-bred five-year-old has won seven times from 15 starts including his last two races at Melbourne.

Wyong Cup runner-up Gazza Guru will get a chance to turn the tables on Glencadam Gold after trainer Stephen Farley chose to enter the veteran gelding.

Another interesting nomination is Racing Heart who was formerly trained in Queensland by Robert Heathcote.

The six-year-old has been transferred to Joe Pride in Sydney with the goal of contesting some Group staying races this spring after a successful period of racing throughout the Queensland winter.

In his past five starts the son of Show A Heart has won three times and has not finished worse than third place.
