Jason Warren-trained gelding Bel Sprinter has been installed as favourite for his spring starting race this Saturday in the 2012 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.
The five-year-old has not been seen since the autumn where he won first-up in the Listed Adams Stakes before failing to place in three other starts during a campaign that was interrupted by injury.
He is rated a good chance of returning to the winner’s circle this weekend with bookmaker.com.au currently offering him as a $2.40 favourite.
Following the Mornington-based sprinter in the market is talented Peter Moody-trained entire Golden Archer ($3.00).
The Rock Of Gibraltar four-year-old has won two of three starts since resuming from injury in July including the Listed Heath 1100 at Caulfield two weeks ago.
Racing for the first time this spring is Mick Price-trained gelding Stratcombe ($7.50) who was a picture of consistency in seven starts during the autumn.
The five-year-old won four of seven starts and finished second on the other three occasions including a runner-up to Curtana in the Listed Straight Six in May.
There is a large gap behind the top three in the betting market with consistent mare Platelet the next best ahead Group 1 winner Green Birdie ($14.00) and Didntcostalot ($15.00).
Platelet has only missed a place once in 13 starts and kicked off her spring in promising style when third to Golden Archer in the Heath 1100.
The Tony Vasil-trained Green Birdie has been unable to place in three starts since returning from a lengthy stint in Hong Kong while Didntcostalot will is stepping up in class after an impressive two-length win at Sandwon last month.
Other runners in the McEwen Stakes include Umgeton ($21.00), Snitzem ($21.00) and Morant ($31.00).
