Stocks Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw Announced

A 12-horse field of quality mares has been named to line up in Saturday’s Group 2 2012 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Many of these horses will be targeted at bigger later races in the spring, with the very best mares likely to contest the Group 1 Myer Classic in November.

Having their second start of the spring is the Aaron Purcell-trained Spirit Song who produced a solid fifth first-up but was excellent in the autumn.

Before the first-up spring hit-out, Spirit Song had finished in the top two in her eight previous starts including wins in both the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy and the Group 2 Sunline Stakes.

She tops the handicap ratings for the $220,000 mares’ feature with a rating of 102 which is one point higher than the Mark Webb-trained Avienus.

The seven-year-old will be out to break a two-year drought, having not crossed the line in front since she took top honours in this exact event in 2010.

One horse in consistent form is the Chris Hyland-trained Rock Princess who has not finished worse than fourth in nine starts since May.

The lightly-raced Oasis Bloom is likely to appreciate the step up in distance after failing to place in two starts at shorter trips this spring.

Trained by Peter Morgan and Craig Widdision, the daughter of Al Maher is considered to be a very promising stayer in the making.

Other horses set to contest the Stocks Stakes are the Stuart Webb-trained Bliss Street, New Zealand-bred My Chicharita and Midnight Martini.
