85 Initial Acceptances for 2012 Thousand Guineas

Eighty five hopefuls remain ahead of the biggest three-year-old fillies’ feature of the spring following first acceptances for the 2012 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Commanding Jewel

Commanding Jewel is one of the more exciting horses still in contention for the Thousand Guineas

To be held on Wednesday October 17, the prestigious Group 1 event often unearths a star and in 2011 was won by the still unbeaten Atlantic Jewel.

Attempting to follow in Atlantic Jewel’s footsteps this year is three-quarter sister Commanding Jewel who won on debut at Swan Hill last month before backing it up win a one-length win at Moonee Valley on August 25.

The major casualty from the initial 206-horse nominations list is Samaready with the Golden Slipper third placegetter to miss the entire spring with injury.

One other exciting filly who will not be starting in the Thousand Guineas is Elite Elle with connections choosing to stick to shorter races with the exciting daughter of Shamardal.

But the pair’s absence is more than taken care of by a number of quality fillies including this weekend’s Golden Rose favourite Nechita.

The Patinack-owned youngster has only had two starts to date but has been particularly impressive when scoring dominant wins in both.

As expected Gerald Ryan chose not to accept with star filly Snitzerland who will be kept to a sprinting program targeting the Coolmore Stud Stakes in November.

But Ryan still has two entries in the form of the lightly-raced Villa Splendido and Group 3 winner Flying Snitzel.

Other notable horses still among the Thousand Guineas entries are Bart Cummings-trained Norzita and Adelaide filly Molto Bene.
