Kingston Town Stakes 2012 – Nominations Announced

While the Golden Rose will be the feature race at Rosehill this weekend there are plenty of quality support acts and one of those is the Group 3 2012 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m).

Strawberry Boy is chasing a Caulfield Cup start in this weekend's Kingston Town Stakes

A number of quality stayers have been nominated for the $125,000 race including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Strawberry Boy who is trying to earn a berth in this year’s Caulfield Cup.

The four-year-old won by 2 1/2 lengths first-up at Warwick Farm last month and backed it up on Saturday to win the Paul Noble Mile by a 1 1/2 length margin.

Waterhouse did not shy away from calling him a Caulfield Cup contender following Saturday’s race but he would need to win this weekend to ensure qualification.

“He’s more than a nice horse, he’s so exciting, he’s got so much upside,” Waterhouse said.

“I think he is a real Caulfield Cup horse, a real Caulfield Cup horse.”

Saturday’s test will be far more difficult than anything he has faced before with a number of spring staying contenders nominated.

Among them is Chris Waller’s dual stakes winning import Permit and the Metropolitan-bound Stout Hearted.

Permit returned earlier this month to run second in the Listed Premier’s Cup while Stout Hearted is yet to finish worse than fourth from seven starts in Australia.

Joining the pair in stepping out for Waller is The Verminator who took top honours in last year’s Metropolitan.

Other horses nominated for the Kingston Town Stakes include the Lloyd Williams-owned Midas Touch, multiple stakes winner Ironstein and the Ron Quinton-trained Crafty Irna.
