Dear Demi’s Furious Stakes Win on Way to 2012 VRC Oaks

Clarry Conners-trained filly Dear Demi confirmed herself as a genuine 2012 VRC Oaks contender when winning the 2012 Furious Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Connors has never doubted the 2500-metre Group 1 feature is a logical target for the three-year-old but she showed excellent ability over a much shorter trip on Saturday.

With James McDonald in the saddle, Dear Demi was positioned in the back half of the field before coming towards the outside approaching the final turn.

She showed excellent acceleration to gallop clear of the rivals and claim a three-quarter length victory from Meidung and Jade Marauder.

McDonald, who has ridden Dear Demi in her five most recent starts, was excited by her spring prospects following Saturday’s convincing win.

“The harder the fight is, the more she gives,” McDonald said.

“Once she got clear air she accelerated brilliantly and she held them at bay pretty comfortably, so I’m looking forward to her next starts.

“Bring on that Oaks.”

The daughter of Dehere, who finished third first-up in the Silver Shadow Stakes, will contest the remaining races of the Princess Series which are the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1500m) on Saturday week and the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).

Conners is convinced the Oaks, which will be held at Flemington on November 8, is an ideal target for the promising filly.

“I’m sure she’ll get the 2500 metres,” Conners said.

Dear Demi has won three of 10 career starts and had a highly successful two-year-old campaign that included winning the Listed Fernhill Quality and running second to Pierro in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.

Bought for $130,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions sale at the Gold Coast, she has already collected $350,000 in prizemoney.
