Veteran Danleigh Too Strong and Wins 2012 Chelmsford Stakes

Veteran gelding Danleigh showed he still has plenty left to offer today as he scored a dominant victory in the Group 2 2012 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

Danleigh scores a dominant win in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes

In a race that was ridden at a decent tempo set by Somepin Anypin, the multiple Group 1 winner was held just off the pace but as they hit the straight he always looked the winner.

The multiple Group 1 winner bounded clear and despite a strong effort from Secret Admirer managed to hang on for a half-length victory in the day’s feature race.

Showing no signs of the throat operation undertaken prior to his spring preparation, Danleigh recorded his 10th win from 55 starts and took his prize pool to more than $2.4 million.

Trainer Chris Waller was thrilled to see the successful gelding back to his best and said he was behaving more like four or five-year-old rather than his actual age of nine.

The leading Sydney trainer said the next target would be the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 22 where he will attempt to add a fifth Group 1 title to his resume.

Star jockey Hugh Bowman has had a long association with Danleigh and praised both the horse and the training performance of Waller to get the son of Mujahid back to his best.

“I’ve got to give a big thankyou to Chris Waller and his staff,” Bowman said.

“He was the best horse in the race and all he had to do was recapture some of his Group 1 form and he was able to do that today.”

2011 Epsom winner Secret Admirer finished off strongly to take runner-up honours as did the third-placed Lamasery.

There are still plenty of exciting races left this weekend so be sure to head to bookmaker.com.au and back a great-value winner!
