Southern Speed Edges out Mangihar to Win 2012 Makybe Diva Stakes

Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed beat Manighar for the first time today in an exciting photo finish in the Group 2 2012 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

With globetrotting jockey Craig Williams aboard, the Leon Macdonald-trained mare was held in fourth position and got a nice run as they entered the straight.

Multiple Group 1 winner Manighar beat the five-year-old three times during a stellar autumn campaign but despite a late charge was just edged out in the Melbourne feature race.

Manighar had no luck throughout the running but showed his class to rally late before being beaten by a bob of the head at the post.

The pair topped the markets and deservedly so as nothing else looked a winning chance in the $175,000 event.

The pair are likely to meet again on a number of occasions throughout the spring with both likely contenders for both the Group 1 2012 Cox Plate and 2012 Caulfield Cup.

Whether the Cox Plate or the Caulfield Cup becomes the main target for Southern Speed is yet to be decided but Craig Williams said there was no reason why she couldn’t be a contender in both Group 1 features.

A daughter of Southern Image, Southern Speed has won seven of 22 starts and collected over $2.5 million in prizemoney.
