Julienas Wins Close 2012 Wyong Cup

Gai Waterhouse import Julienas showed his potential ahead of a big spring campaign as he edged out local hope Gazza Guru and turned the tables on Chris Waller’s Kelinni in the Listed 2012 Wyong Cup (2100m) today.

With Waterhouse stable jockey Nash Rawiller aboard, Julienas was held on the fence in fourth position before being peeled off as the field approached the home turn.

He was neck-and-neck with Kelinni for most of the straight before Gazza Guru made a late charge to charge to steal second spot.

It was the son of Cape Cross’s first win on Australian soil after finishing third on debut at Warwick Farm before going down to Kelinni on August 25.

Nominated for the Melbourne Cup, stable representative Mark Newnham said the first major spring goal for Julienas would be the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) on October 6 at Randwick.

“He keeps improving every week and today he’s only third-up. With this rate of improvement there is a good win in him,” Newnham said.

Newnham said the next test for Julienas was not yet decided but hinted they would avoid the Newcastle Cup as stablemate Glencadam Gold is likely to head there.

Nash Rawiller, who in the previous race partnered Miss Stellabelle to victory in the Mona Lisa Stakes, said The Metropolitan was well within reach of the six-year-old.

“It’s right up his alley [The Metropolitan]. He’s got improvement left in him and the penny is just starting to drop with the horse,” Rawiller said.
