Two of this season’s biggest spring cup hopefuls are dominating the Makybe Diva Stakes 2012 odds for this weekend’s Flemington feature with Manighar the narrow favourite over reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed.
Set to run as Flemington Race 6 at 3:35pm on Saturday, the $300,000 Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) has this year drawn one of its best ever fields with 12 genuine gallopers in the mix.
Topping the current Makybe Diva Stakes betting markets at bookmaker.com.au is Peter Moody’s resuming autumn star Manighar at a quote of $3.30.
While horse’s resuming from a spell don’t have the best recent record in the Makybe Diva Stakes, Littoiro’s win last year the first from first-up runner since Confectioner in 2005 who was the only returning winner in the past 30 years, Manighar certainly has claims to buck the trend.
The imported Linamix gelding was the first horse in history to win the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes, The BMW treble last season and with a solid first-up record, as well winning form over the mile when resuming from a spell to win the Group 3 TS Carlyon Cup over the 1600m at Caulfield back in February, there’s a lot to like about Manighar.
Favourites however have won just one of the past eight Makybe Divas with Weekend Hussler ($1.85) back in 2008.
Following hot on his heels in the Makybe Diva Stakes odds is then the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained Southern Speed, the smart five-year-old mare holding the fitness edge on Saturday.
Beaten by Manighar when a nose away second in the Australian Cup and then fifth in both the Ranvet Stakes and The BMW in the autumn, Southern Speed has already had two runs this time in.
Third in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) first-up Southern Speed raced for a second time at Morphettville to easily win the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) on August 25 and on Saturday she pays $3.40 to win again this time in Melbourne.
She has a number of historical trends to overcome however as no mare has won the race since Saleous (1996).
There are just two other hopefuls under $10 in the Makybe Diva Stakes betting with returning Doomben Cup winner Mawingo ($5) and the Mark Kavanagh-trained December Draw ($8).
Beaten favourite in last year’s Caulfield Cup seven-year-old Medecis gelding December Draw runs for the first time since breaking down in the $2.65 million classic last October.
Other longer-priced Makybe Diva hopefuls that have claims to score an upset on the weekend then include the Clinton McDonald-trained Lawrence Stakes winner Second Effort ($17) who is out to become the seventh winner of the Lawrence – Makybe Diva Stakes double, and Shenzhou Steeds ($21) who took out the Ipswich Cup – Caloundra Cup double last season.
