Two horses are battling for favouritism in the Wyong Gold Cup 2012 odds for this Friday’s showdown with the Chris Waller-trained Kelinni the narrow favourite ahead of Gai Waterhouse’s runner Julienas.
Running as Wyong Race 7 at 4:35pm the $150,000 Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) is the richest race held at the track each year.
Originally the Wyong Gold Cup field for 2012 featured 10 stayers but it is now down to nine following the early withdrawal of Beaveroo.
Topping the latest Wyong Cup betting markets at bookmaker.com.au is Waller’s in-form five-year-old Kelinni, the Refuse To Bend gelding after their third straight win.
After back-to-back victories, both by one and a quarter lengths over 2200m at Warwick Farm last month, Kelinni is in ace form to score their first ever black type success.
The lightly-raced import is also out to hand Waller with his third consecutive Wyong Gold Cup win following the victories of Hawk Island (2010) and The Verminator (2011), the latter continuing on to win the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) two starts later.
Kelinni only narrowly holds the advantage in the Wyong Cup odds at a quote of $2.80 with Julienas hot on their heels paying $2.90 to turn the tables on their last start conqueror.
The six-year-old Cape Cross gelding finished second to Kelinni in the Australian Turf Club Benchmark 87 at Warwick Farm on August 25 carrying 59kg but will appreciate the drop back to 56.5kg on Friday.
Nash Rawiller retains the ride on the also lightly-raced galloper, Julienas having had just 13 starts to date, as the former European stakes their claims for a Melbourne Spring Cups bid this season.
Outside of the top two there are only two other Wyong Gold Cup hopefuls at single-figures to win with Peter Moody’s Victorian raider Storm Burst ($5) coming off two impressive victories in Melbourne firstly by five lengths at Flemington over 2000m and then by three lengths over 2040m at Moonee Valley during august, and the Peter Snowden-trained Yulalona ($8) out for their first win since taking out the Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) at Rosehill last Boxing Day.
Other notable hopes a little longer in the markets include Gwenda Markwell’s Kembla Grange galloper Peal Of Bells ($11) out to improve on their ninth in the Premier’s Cup at Rosehill last Saturday, and the Stephen Farley-trained local veteran Gazza Guru ($21).
